Bad soft sci-fi can be weirdly fascinating because there is nowhere for it to hide (hard sci-fi have all that technical wizardry to hide behind). But nobody is checking the orbital math or asking whether the alien biology would survive peer review in a soft sci-fi. The movie gets more freedom which means character, imagination, world-building, and basic storytelling have to do the heavy lifting.
