Sauron has long been a terrifying villain in The Lord of the Rings, not only in Peter Jackson's original trilogy movies (and various Lord of the Rings movies and shows since), but also since J.R.R. Tolkien's books were published in the 1950s. In the movies, particularly the original trilogy, defeating Sauron felt like a near impossibility and required the coming together of many groups across Middle-Earth—and even then, it almost didn't work.
