The Wire is such a sobering, authentic look at the seedy underbelly of the American city that it often plays like a documentary. The naturalistic performances, fly-on-the-wall cinematography, and fiercely realistic storytelling all come together to make The Wire feel more real and lifelike than any other cop show on the air (by a pretty wide margin). But it’s not just an examination of the United States’ broken institutions through the microcosmic prism of Baltimore; it’s also stylized enough to satisfy as an entertaining TV show.
