“2001” Inspired Zach Cregger’s “The Flood”

With his “Resident Evil” now in cinemas, filmmaker Zach Cregger is now turning towards his next feature – “The Flood”.

The property was famously set up at Netflix who tried to court Cregger to direct, but the two reached an impasse over Netflix not wanting to do a theatrical release – and Cregger wouldn’t get on board unless he got a firm one.

The film, and Cregger, ultimately ended up at Warner Bros. Pictures, where he’s opted to direct it rather than the “Weapons” spin-off “Gladys” which he’s only producing.

Now, talking to Men’s Health, Cregger confirmed “The Flood” is his next film, with shooting to begin early next year ahead of a Summer 2028 release:

“I just love the story, dude. That movie is about something in a real way that’s important to me. It’s another bizarre narrative structure in the way that ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian’ are, but it’s not jumping perspectives. It unfolds in a very unique way that I’m really proud of. It’s disturbing, but it’s not a horror movie, although there are horror scenes in it. It feels intimidating to me. I’m still not really sure how to make it, but I think that’s a good thing.”

Asked what inspired the film, he says it’s a big ol’ ode to a Stanley Kubrick classic:

“I’m not comparing it to “2001,” because I think “2001” is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word; there’s a bizarreness to that movie that’s really undeniable, and it’s also a horror movie. I think “2001” is a really thrilling horror movie about human nature, and obviously about artificial intelligence, but it asks big questions. And I think, in that way, there’s some similarity with ‘Flood.‘”

“The Flood” follows a deep-space exploration team aboard the vessel Spiritus Mundi. They pick up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet and investigate – only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that starts warping time, reality, and the crew’s minds.

Cregger wrote the script for the film in just five days. Steven Spielberg will produce the project that is set for an August 11th 2028 release.
