A badly written sequel is worse than an ordinary bad movie. An ordinary bad movie can fail on its own terms and just die there. A bad sequel takes over memory. It crawls back into something that already had a pulse, already found a tone, already understood what kind of pain or pleasure it was built to deliver, and then it starts misreading the original in real time.
