The term "pop punk" may be seen as something of an oxymoron—to some, fun, lighthearted pop music and the rebellious sensibilities of punk don't belong together, and yet pop punk has solidified its place in music history, despite not always being taken seriously. Pop punk, as its name suggests, merges aggressive, guitar-driven punk music with catchy hooks typically associated with pop music, but genre lines can be blurry. Pop punk has lots of overlap with emo and good, old-fashioned alternative rock, and the early-2000s scene in particular featured bands playing with one or more.
