Suspenseful movies have been alive and well for as far back as cinema’s early days, really. Maybe people like that thrill of feeling on edge, or maybe it’s just cool when a movie is able to provoke what’s otherwise an undesirable emotion, like horror movies being genuinely scary. Alfred Hitchcock did suspense particularly well, to the point of being called the master of it, and then plenty of other filmmakers have kept it all going in his place.
