An R rating once came with an obvious box office disadvantage. Studios could sell a PG-13 blockbuster to virtually everyone, while R-rated movies automatically excluded younger audiences unless they attended with an adult. For decades, that put a very real ceiling on how much money even the biggest adult-oriented releases could make.
