Hard sci-fi is a highly specific subgenre of science fiction wherein the plot is mostly grounded in reality. While advanced tech is almost always the name of the game for the genre, the tech in hard sci-fi is usually only one or two steps above what already exists, rather than being completely off-the-wall. Space travel doesn't feature faster-than-light travel, and it certainly doesn't feature massive, action-packed space battles.
