The fantasy genre has gone through many ups and downs throughout the history of cinema. It's long been the genre at the forefront of cinematic milestones, taking advantage of new technologies and lavish set designs to bring the impossible to life. Some of the best examples can be found in the early 20th Century, with The Adventures of Prince Achmed and The Wizard of Oz, as well as a long list of dark fantasy films from the 1980s, and Sir Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the early 2000s.
