Emma Straub’s latest work has taken its first major step toward the big screen. This comes after Elisabeth Moss and Lindsey McManus secured the adaptation rights to the author’s bestselling novel through their Love & Squalor Pictures banner.

According to Variety, the project is currently in active development, but it remains in the early stages. Meanwhile, no writer, cast members, distributor, or production timeline has been announced.

The adaptation is based on Straub’s American Fantasy, which was published in April 2026. It quickly landed on The New York Times bestseller list. The story centers on Annie, a newly single woman. She signs up for a cruise built around a beloved 1990s boy band. As the trip unfolds, Annie is forced to confront unresolved questions about her past and the direction of her life.

Emma Straub will remain involved in the project as an executive producer, while Moss and McManus are producing. According to the producers, “Emma’s honest yet humorous portrayal of the humbling experience of being a fan is so rare and genuinely fun to read that we knew we had to find a way to bring it to screen.”

Meanwhile, the acclaimed novelist said, “Elisabeth Moss has talent spilling out of every one of her pores, and I feel delighted to have been caught in the tractor beam of her gaze.”

Interest in adapting the novel surfaced after Elisabeth Moss was introduced to American Fantasy shortly before its publication. The connection came through a shared appearance with Straub on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where the author provided copies of the book to guests.
