More than eight years after The Vampire Diaries ended its eight-season run, the reason why fan-favorite characters Klaus and Caroline did not end up together has finally been revealed. As recounted in Samantha Highfill’s recently released book about the behind-the-scenes intricacies of the series, Julie Plec, one of TVD’s executive producers, has shed light on the creative decision that prevented Joseph Morgan’s Klaus and Candice King’s Caroline from getting involved with one another.
Julie Plec on why The Vampire Diaries didn’t bring Klaus and Caroline together
According to Highfill’s I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries book, the relationship between Klaus and Caroline failed to materialize due to the former’s commitment to TVD spin-off, The Originals. (via Swoon)
In the book, Plec says that it wasn’t easy not to build upon a “relationship that is sizzling with chemistry.” However, the Vampire Diaries writers ultimately had to write Klaus off the main series so that he could transition to The Originals series. As there was “no way in hell” that Caroline could’ve left the main show, the Vampire Diaries writers had to go in a different direction.
Writer and producer Caroline Dries also noted that since Klaus was to participate in a love triangle in the Vampire Diaries spin-off, he couldn’t end up with Caroline.
Plec also divulged, “I knew that I was determined to get Stefan and Caroline together, but then ultimately, I believed Elena would end up back with Stefan, freeing Caroline to be with whoever she wanted to be with, and that The Originals may one day lead us to that, or it might not.”
In a previous interview with TVLine, Plec had remarked that even though the two “could have ended up together” in the main series, she “didn’t want to dishonor Stefan by having Klaus become Caroline’s one true love.”
