Stephen A. Smith teases why Molly Qerim left ESPN

On Tuesday morning’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith addressed Qerim’s departure. He confirmed that she resigned “abruptly” and admitted that it caught him off guard.

“Last night, she abruptly resigned as the host of the show. And to say that I’m quite sad about it is an understatement,” Smith said on air. He described Qerim as not just a co-worker but also a close friend who made his job easier for years.

"That story is for her to tell. Do I have an idea, of course I do. Am I gonna share it with you? No" ?

Smith acknowledged that Qerim had been in contract talks with ESPN but ultimately chose to walk away. “There was a contract negotiation that was going on. ESPN certainly did not want to lose her, but in the end she made a decision to walk away from the show, effective immediately,” he explained.

Although Smith admitted he had “an idea” why she left, he stopped short of sharing details, emphasizing that it was Qerim’s story to tell. “We all make decisions that we deem to be in our best interest for whatever reason,” he said. His comments indicated the exit was not acrimonious but instead a thoughtful life decision, a notion supported by Qerim’s own statement.

Earlier that day, Qerim confirmed her departure on Instagram, writing, “After much reflection, I’ve decided it’s time to close this incredible chapter.” She expressed gratitude for her time on the show: “I’m so grateful for what this journey has given me: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to be part of something truly special.” Before signing off, she left fans curious with a simple “Stay tuned :).”

Qerim has yet to reveal her next project. Whether she continues in sports broadcasting or focuses on her advocacy work with organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of America and the Innocence Project, her next step remains highly anticipated.
