The long-awaited return of Malcolm in the Middle brought back familiar chaos, but one character stood out for a very different reason. Dewey’s limited presence left fans curious, and the creators have now explained what really happened behind the scenes.
Why Dewey had a smaller role in Malcolm in the Middle revival revealed
The revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair, reunited most of the original cast. However, Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the original run from 2000 to 2006, chose not to return. The actor has stepped away from Hollywood and is currently studying at Harvard, making a comeback unlikely.
Producers revealed they made serious efforts to bring him back. In fact, Dewey’s storyline was specifically designed to be as flexible as possible. They even structured scenes so he could appear through a laptop, hoping remote filming would make things easier for him.
Executive producer Tracy Katsky explained to ScreenRant that they kept trying “until the very last day” to convince Sullivan. The idea was simple. If he only needed to appear on video calls, he wouldn’t have to travel or commit much time.
Despite that, he still declined the offer. Katsky said the team respected his decision, even though it surprised them. She admitted turning down such an offer would be tough for most actors, but Sullivan made the choice quickly and confidently. “It would be hard for me to turn something like that down, but it was not hard for him,“ Katsky said.
Creator Linwood Boomer also shared a candid moment with the former child star. When asked again about returning, Sullivan flipped the question, asking Boomer if he would go back to acting himself. When Boomer said no, Sullivan responded, “Okay, well, stop bugging me about it.”
With no return happening, the team recast the role. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepped in as Dewey, with casting director Juel Bestrop finding him through an audition tape. Producers felt he naturally captured the character’s quirky personality and “actually looks more like Dewey than Erik now looks like Dewey.”
