Why 2027 Is the Biggest Year for Superhero Genre Movies

The slate of superhero movies coming in 2027 might be one of the biggest for the genre ever. Superhero movies and TV shows have maintained a strong presence in pop culture over the years. However, their popularity has skyrocketed in the past few decades, and despite widespread conversations about oversaturation, moviegoers have remained largely faithful in their support of the genre. The 2027 slate looks to be special, as Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man all have their movies coming out that year, alongside what will be the sixth Avengers movie, Avengers: Secret Wars.

Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and the Avengers will all get movies in 2027

The Batman 2, Man of Tomorrow, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and Avengers: Secret Wars are all slated to release in 2027. The Batman 2 will serve as a sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman. Man of Tomorrow will feature David Corenswet’s Clark Kent / Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor from 2025’s Superman film. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be the final entry in the Spider-Verse trilogy, which revolves around the adventures of Miles Morales’ Spider-Man.

All of these leading superheroes have massive fan bases. Given that Secret Wars is also coming out in 2027, fans will likely have an incredible year. Additionally, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project, a sequel to 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, are debuting on March 19, 2027, and September 17, 2027, respectively.

The Avengers movies generally include the biggest crossover events in the MCU, featuring the biggest stars in the franchise. It’s safe to assume that Secret Wars will be no exception.

The 2027 movie slate has the most stacked list of superhero features since 2008, when The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hancock, The Incredible Hulk, and Hellboy II: The Golden Army came out. Punisher: War Zone, Superhero Movie, and The Spirit also premiered that year.

The Batman 2 debuts in US theaters on October 1, 2027, Man of Tomorrow on July 9, 2027, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on June 25, 2027, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
