War Machine Star’s New NASCAR Show Greenlit at AMC

AMC is entering the world of stock car racing. The network has officially ordered Thunder Road, a scripted drama series set within the high-stakes world of NASCAR, with Dennis Quaid attached to star. AMC Global Media made the announcement during its Upfront presentation in New York and confirmed the series for a 2027 premiere on both the linear channel and AMC+.

AMC officially greenlights Thunder Road

The series follows the fictional Whitlock family, a blue-collar dynasty whose roots in stock car racing run deep through generations of Southern hill country history. The family built its racing empire from moonshine runs and dirt tracks, but now the modern era presents new threats. Ruthless competitors are pushing the Whitlocks to the edge of extinction.

At the center of the story, Dennis Quaid will play Duane Whitlock, known in racing circles as The Wrecking Ball. He is a towering figure who built an empire and refuses to watch it collapse. As an old king fighting to hold onto his crown, Duane anchors the multi-generational saga as the family battles to preserve its legacy.

Meanwhile, production on the AMC series is set to begin this summer. When it launches in 2027, Thunder Road will mark a milestone for the racing organization as the first long-form drama series produced in partnership with NASCAR. Additionally, the series carries a “produced in association with” credit for the organization, with NASCAR Studio’s Tim Clark and John Dahl serving as executive producers alongside producer Gladys Cheng.

John Fusco created the series and will executive produce. Taylor Elmore is on board as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Cliff Roberts with Syndicate Entertainment and Mark L. Smith. Dan McDermott, Chief Content Officer of AMC Global Media and President of AMC Studios, addressed the partnership in a statement, calling the show “a nonstop thrill ride for viewers.”
