Director Robert Zemeckis seemingly has nothing to prove any longer, having made some of the most memorable Hollywood blockbusters of all time. But success can be fleeting, which Zemeckis probably understands intimately. He hasn't had a hit film in many years, despite numerous attempts to push the boundaries. He was one of the earliest adopters of performance capture technology; some would say that he was unhealthily obsessed. He has worked in live-action as well, but even his dramas have increasingly relied on visual effects. This became obvious with his 2015 film The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a Frenchman who broke into the World Trade Center and performed a tightrope walk across the towers in 1974. The movie was sold as a 3D experience, but not enough people showed up to watch it in theaters.
