Tom Cruise’s Space Movie Gets Much Needed Update

More than four years after news first broke that Tom Cruise was preparing to shoot a movie in outer space, director Doug Liman has finally addressed the status of the project. In a new update, Liman revealed that there are no concrete plans in place. However, the director maintained his enthusiasm for filming in space.

Director Doug Liman has provided a fresh update on his collaboration with Tom Cruise, revealing that the ambitious space movie has not yet moved forward. Speaking with Deadline, Liman explained there are currently no concrete plans to begin production. Both he and Cruise are occupied with other projects. 

Despite the delay, Liman emphasized that his enthusiasm for the project remains the same. He said, “I’m more excited about going to space, not less … but our goal is to make something great.”

However, the director expressed a desire to avoid a project that feels like a “promotional gimmick.” He added, “I want to make a film that people watch in a hundred years when maybe there’s hundreds of movies shot in outer space and there’s nothing special about it being in outer space. That’s the goal of everything I do.”

Liman further reflected on the creative demands such a film would present. He explained, “If I ever shoot a movie in outer space, the question will be what could I do that you couldn’t do on Earth that makes for a great piece of entertainment, that’s better than if you didn’t do it in space.” The director added, “Again, it’s also about technology and storytelling.” 

Plans for a collaboration between Cruise and Liman for a space thriller were first reported by Deadline in 2020, sparking widespread attention at the time. However, since the initial announcement, no significant progress has been made. Liman’s latest comments suggest that the idea remains on hold.

Previously, Liman had already collaborated with Cruise on the sci-fi hit Edge of Tomorrow (2014). More recently, he directed Asteroid, an XR short film.
