Tim Allen has weighed in on a romantic scene in Toy Story 5. The actor, who has voiced Buzz Lightyear for over three decades, shared his candid thoughts on Buzz and Jessie’s storyline in the latest installment.

Why the Toy Story 5 kiss felt awkward to Tim Allen

In a recent interview with US Weekly, Tim Allen admitted that the kiss between Buzz Lightyear and Jessie felt awkward.

“[It was] creepy!” Allen said. “When I’m doing [Toy Story], I’m literally an 8-year-old kid. That’s what the personality I feel is inside Buzz, is my 11-year-old. So it’s like, ‘Oh God, oh no, I’m doing that?”

For context, near the end of Toy Story 5, Buzz tries to tell Jessie how he feels. But before he can finish, she kisses him. This was a major moment for both characters, who have seemingly had feelings for each other for a long time.

Allen further explained that the kissing scene felt strange to him. He said that it was almost as if a child version of himself was experiencing it. The actor then compared the feeling to watching a romantic scene with his daughters in the room, when everyone suddenly falls quiet and feels uncomfortable.

The Santa Claus actor said that when he first read the script, he asked Pixar whether they would actually show the kiss. He joked that giving toy characters romantic relationships raises bigger questions, such as whether they could eventually get married.

In the movie, Buzz and Jessie do have a wedding ceremony when their owner, Bonnie, playfully marries them. After seeing how it all played out, Allen appreciated the scene because it created different reactions from audiences. He said that adults found it sweet, while many children reacted with an “Eww!”

When Toy Story 4 was released in 2019, the Emmy-nominated actor recalled telling Pixar that he wanted his character to have a bigger role. To his surprise, the writers seemed to take the comment seriously. When he later saw the storyboards for Toy Story 5, he realized Buzz had become much more important to the plot.

Toy Story 5 is currently running in theaters worldwide.
