In our media landscape, it can often be hard to find faithful depictions of adolescence. When it comes to television, most shows focusing on teenagers are usually either trying to teach their audiences a lesson or pushing exaggerated depictions of youth that serve more to titillate viewers than to actually illuminate them. Sometimes, these shows are good. Think Sex Education or Euphoria, for instance. Still, series that offer a portrayal of what an actual adolescence might look like are extremely hard to find—and, therefore, extremely precious. British television usually gets a lot of praise for the respect it extends to its teenage characters in shows as varied as Skins and, of course, Adolescence. However, if we truly want to peek into the mind of an actual kid and see how their life plays out, we should really be looking at a mid-2010s gem called My Mad Fat Diary.
