In the age when soap operas have become less common, it’s almost amusing to remember the days when the genre dominated daytime television. For decades, over-the-top drama, love triangles, and brazen twists made up hours of daily television. Now, only a handful of soaps remain, with ABC’s General Hospital being arguably one of the most influential. All these years later, the show is still finding ways to stay relevant and craft surprising twists, even for long-running characters. There is a sense of irony in the fact that it is the Alphabet Network’s final soap still in production, as, at one point, General Hospital spawned a full-fledged television universe.
