McDonald’s is considered a pretty cheap place to eat in the UK, with food starting from just £1.19 on the Saver Menu.

And while there have been noticeable price rises over the last few years, it’s still possible to feed a family there without spending a small fortune.

However, the same can’t be said for one other location, where the cost of meals never fails to stun visitors.

A branch of the popular fast food chain in Switzerland is regularly touted as the ‘most expensive’ McDonald’s, as customers have been known to easily spend between £40 and £50 on lunch for just two people.

Where is this pricey McDonald’s?

It can be found in Zermatt, a village and ski resort in the Swiss Alps, known as the gateway to the Matterhorn – one of the highest ski areas in the world.

The McDonald’s itself is housed inside a charming Alpine chalet-style building, with wooden walls inside that some say give it a ‘cosy log cabin feel’.

Most things on the menu are the same, but as it’s a different country, there are a few products that we don’t have here, such as The M burger, which features two Swiss beef patties, melted cheese, lettuce, and crispy onions.

There are also chicken wings on the menu, pepper potatoes, a chicken paprika burger, and the Big Tasty.

Other items include a Nutella Sundae, Swiss Chocolate Pie, McPops, and it also has a gluten-free menu.

What are the prices like?

While many social media users have proclaimed Zermatt’s McDonald’s the most expensive in the world, it’s hard to say for sure whether it actually is the most expensive of every branch that exists, given that there are currently more than 44,000 locations around the globe.

It becomes even trickier to police this when you consider that prices are constantly going up amid the cost of living crisis, and franchisees are able to set their own prices.

However, it’s clear to see that certain items on the menu in the Zermatt restaurant do cost much more than the equivalent items here in the UK.

For example, a Big Mac at McDonald’s in Switzerland costs 7.20 CHF (£6.80), while here it’s £5.11. Similarly, in Switzerland, a sharebox of 20 McNuggets is 18.80 CHF (£17.74), whereas in the UK, 20 McNuggets are almost £9 less, at £8.79.

Fizzy drinks at McDonald’s in Switzerland are almost double the price that they are here, and fries can cost as much as 6.40 CHF, which would be £6. In the UK, large fries are only £2.59.

A meal for two for £40

Abbey Sadleir shared her trip to McDonald’s in Zermatt earlier this year in a video on TikTok, revealing she spent £50 on food for two people.

She showed off her receipt, which featured two meals, an extra veggie burger, and dessert, and the total came to 53 CHF.

Similarly, Cameron Guzzo visited and spent $54, which is just under £40 on two meals – a Friends meal with a Royal Bacon Cheeseburger, fries and a drink, plus The M burger, Pepper Potatoes, Apple Juice and a shot of Espresso.

‘It’s decent, but it’s still just McDonald’s, definitely not worth $54,’ he says at the end of the video.

And @danielleoutdoors_ shared: ‘The cosy chalet vibes from the outside were cute, and they had a lot of unique, fun local items, which were fun to choose from.

‘The Big Mac meal on its own was over $16 (£11), and I think we spent $50 (£36.86) for two people, which is crazy.’

She added: ‘While this is the most expensive McDonald’s, it’s actually one of the most affordable places to eat in Zermatt.’

Metro has contacted McDonald’s Switzerland for comment on the pricing.

This comes after the world’s largest McDonald’s opened just outside of Disneyland Paris.

The giant site, spanning 2,000 square metres, is located inside the Disney Village by the theme park and is described as an ‘ultramodern’ building that cost more than €20 million to create.

Spanning three floors, the huge restaurant has seating for 600 people at one time, including 200 on outdoor terraces.

There are 23 self-service kiosks, a panoramic glass elevator, an ‘elegant’ McCafe, and table ordering via QR codes, as well as table service.

What’s more, all of the food is reportedly made-to-order, and across the 210 employees, staff members represent 16 different languages, so they are able to offer ‘personalised’ service to customers from around the world.

But perhaps the most exciting feature is a three-story indoor play area that’s ‘designed to extend the magic of Disney’ and ‘offer an unforgettable family experience’. It features tunnels, slides, and more.
