Liam Hemsworth recently spoke about being cast in The Witcher Season 4 as Geralt of Rivia following Henry Cavill‘s departure. Cavill portrayed the character in the first three seasons of the show before announcing his exit in 2022 and confirming that Hemsworth would replace him. This was before Season 3 premiered on Netflix in two parts on June 29, 2023, and July 27, 2023.

Hemsworth recalled boarding The Witcher Season 4 as Geralt in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. “There was quite a bit of noise and I had to put that aside,” he explained. “It started to become a distraction. I dealt with that sort of thing in the past a lot and, you know, at the end of the day, I love making movies and I love telling stories and acting. I just don’t want any of that to affect my way of telling the story that I’m trying to tell,” Hemsworth added.

The Lonely Planet star revealed he “jumped off social media and the internet most of last year” after the news broke of the recast. He also disclosed that the initial offer caught him by surprise. “It came out of nowhere,” Hemsworth said, adding, “I was as surprised as anyone.”

Notably, The Witcher is an adaptation of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, which also inspired a series of video games from CD Projekt. Hemsworth has been a vocal fan of the games. After being cast, he delved into the books and the previous three seasons of the show to understand how he would approach his character.

In the same interview, Hemsworth noted that he is a “massive fan” of Cavill and “what he did in the show.” However, Hemsworth ultimately decided to focus on Geralt’s lighter side and his protective nature. He mentioned how his father, Craig Hemsworth, a social service counselor who worked in child protection, influenced his portrayal of Geralt. “We were brought up with this real sense of taking care of people around you,” Hemsworth said. “There’s elements of that I felt connected to,” he further stated.

The Witcher Season 4 debuts on Netflix on October 30, 2025.
