A familiar face returns to shake things up in a big way, as The Testaments kicks off with a moment fans didn’t see coming. The sequel series brings back a key player, and it instantly raises the stakes.
The Testaments team explain June’s return after Handmaid’s Tale
June Osborne steps back into the spotlight in The Testaments, and her comeback isn’t just a cameo for shock value. The character, played by Elisabeth Moss, appears at the end of the premiere episode and then takes on a bigger role in episode three. Her return ties directly into the ongoing fight against Gilead and sets the tone for what’s ahead.
Showrunner Bruce Miller explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that June’s story was never truly finished. Even though the sequel shifts focus to a younger generation, he felt her journey needed more closure.
“Having the journey of June felt — it could not end until certain things fell into place,” Miller said. He further added that there were “many factors involved” in bringing her back, including scheduling, but creatively, it made sense because “she had work to do.
The story now follows Agnes and Daisy, played by Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday. Daisy’s arc connects directly to June, especially after a tragic bombing kills her parents. It is later revealed they were part of Mayday, the resistance group. June rescues Daisy and begins guiding her, almost shaping her into a younger version of herself.
For the cast, sharing scenes with Moss was a big moment. Halliday admitted she often just watched Moss work between takes, calling her deeply prepared and fully immersed in the role. Meanwhile, Ann Dowd, who returns as Aunt Lydia, said Moss remains “the heart and soul” of the franchise and praised her presence on and off screen.
June’s reappearance also signals that the resistance is far from over. As one character puts it, when she shows up, it means Mayday is active.
With new episodes dropping weekly on Hulu, the sequel is clearly building toward a bigger, more intense fight against Gilead.
