Even though it’s been more than four years since The Suicide Squad made its way into the theaters, a question that continues to bug fans’ minds is why Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller sent Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr. to his death in the film. James Gunn, who is overseeing the revamped DCU, has finally provided an answer to this query by revealing an amusing scene that was eventually cut from The Suicide Squad.
James Gunn on The Suicide Squad’s deleted scene with Rick Flag and Amanda Waller
In the latest episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn, the Guardians of the Galaxy director disclosed a cut scene from The Suicide Squad that explained why Amanda Waller assigned such a perilous mission to Rick Flag Jr.
The opening moments of the 2021 flick see Kinnaman’s character lead a team, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, to the island of Corto Maltese. However, viewers soon learn that the said group is actually a decoy. This results in the deaths of almost every squad member.
Steve Agee, who co-hosts the DC podcast, first brought the said sequence into light. He stated, “There’s a funny scene where he’s like, ‘I don’t know what I did to get stuck with you idiots,’ and then we flash back to him insulting Amanda Waller.” Gunn instantly joined in the banter and remarked that the said cut scene from The Suicide Squad is still “in the outtakes.”
Addressing Joel Kinnaman, who came to the podcast as a special guest, the DC Studios co-CEO added, “Idris’ character, Bloodsport, says, ‘What landed you here? Why would Waller let you die?’ and then you think back to when you were in the office and Waller came in one day wearing this really ugly shirt with flowers all over it. And you said to her, ‘Waller, what’s with that shirt? It looks like the clowns took a s–t all over you.'”
After noting how “scary” Viola Davis can be when she turns into Amanda Waller, Gunn confirmed that Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr., making fun of the A.R.G.U.S. director, was why she sent him to die. Gunn then concluded his account by triumphantly saying that this story is now “canon.”
