The Boys creator has answered the question fans were asking the moment the Season 5 Episode 2 credits rolled. Showrunner Eric Kripke explained why one supe walked away from something that was supposed to be a death sentence.
Erik Kripke on how Soldier Boy survived Butcher’s virus in The Boys
The Boys Season 5 returned to Prime Video on April 8, 2026, dropping two premiere episodes simultaneously. The second installment, “Teenage Kix,” closed with Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) sitting upright inside a body bag after apparent death from Butcher’s supe-killing virus.
Showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed to TV Insider that Soldier Boy survived the exposure. “It is true that Soldier Boy is not dead, and the reasons that he’s seemingly immune to this virus are what really set up the primary MacGuffin of the season,” Kripke said. He added that the development “really turns everything on its head,” sparking a race between Homelander and The Boys to obtain whatever is granted for survival.
The leading explanation involves V1, or V-One, the original Compound V formula introduced in Gen V Season 2. Scientist Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) injected himself with V1 in 1967 and explained that while regular Compound V grants superpowers and durability, V1 makes its recipient functionally immortal. Soldier Boy, created during World War II using Frederick Vought’s original Nazi-era formula, may carry V1 in his biology, shielding him from Butcher’s current strain.
His two teammates, Rock Hard and Jetstreak, both died after exposure to the same virus in the same sealed environment. This contrast suggests Soldier Boy possesses a fundamentally different biological makeup that neutralises the concoction.
Kripke told TV Insider that the storyline becomes a major seasonal driver. “If Homelander acquires it, it’s game over. If The Boys acquire it, then maybe the people that they love can survive,” he said.
The Boys Season 5 continues Wednesdays on Prime Video, concluding with the series finale on May 20, 2026.
