Stranger Things Actor’s NSFW Horror Movie Gets Mediocre RT Score & Reviews

A beloved Stranger Things actor trades the supernatural thrills of Hawkins for something far more disturbing in a new horror remake. The film puts a modern twist on one of cinema’s most notorious titles, but its Rotten Tomatoes score suggests critics are not entirely convinced the update earns its infamous name.

What Faces of Death reviews are saying

Critics hold divided opinions on the 2026 Faces of Death remake. Katie Rife of Inverse calls it “an impressively nasty piece of work,” despite minor franchise issues. David Ehrlich of IndieWire awards it a B+, praising how it “satisfies on a basic, audience-forward level.” Owen Gleiberman of Variety describes it as “a halfway clever retro slasher movie that actually has something on its mind.”

Not all critics share that enthusiasm. Jacob Oller of AV Club argues it is “not outlandish enough to stand out from the formerly forbidden footage filling our feeds every single day.” Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter takes issue with its self-described identity as “an exploitation of an iconic exploitation film.”

Ross McIndoe of Slant Magazine writes the film “loses its grasp on the original’s pointed questions as things wear on.” William Bibbiani of TheWrap calls it “a terrifying, stark, oppressive horror film that outscares the other modern slashers.”

Faces of Death’s Rotten Tomatoes score revealed

The film currently holds a 69% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 39 reviews. Rotten Tomatoes has not yet recorded an audience score for the film.

Director Daniel Goldhaber co-wrote the screenplay with Isa Mazzei. The film stars Barbie Ferreira as a content moderator who discovers apparent murder re-enactments online. Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery leads alongside her in a dark departure from his TV roots.

Faces of Death opens wide in US theatres on April 10, 2026, marking IFC Films’ widest release to date.
