The Star Trek timeline is so expansive that it can be easy to forget that the origin was a three-part network TV series in the 1960s. Star Trek: The Original Series was a product of its time, despite being set two centuries in the future. Of the many ways that the show is very '60s, possibly the most notable is that The Original Series was limited by what was available at the time (on an NBC budget) when it came to designing the aliens. A suspicious number of them were humanoid, but luckily, there's an in-universe explanation for it.
