Somehow, Spaceballs returned. At long last, it was confirmed last year that Mel Brooks' classic parody film would finally be getting a sequel, complete with Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, and more back in the fold, new writers in Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, and enough new Star Wars jokes to fill a galaxy far, far away. Compared to the original, which came out in 1987 after the trilogy of sci-fi classics that started it all, there's now a whole empire of content to pull from for inspiration this time around, including a whole slate of prequels and sequels rife with potential for spoofs. There's only so much one movie can cover, though, and, in an interview with Collider's Maggie Lovitt for LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Samit and Hernandez hinted at which trilogy Spaceballs 2 would be targeting to get its laughs.
