Production on the highly anticipated Tomb Raider series has hit a temporary snag. Star Sophie Turner recently sustained an injury on set, prompting a brief pause in filming as she recovers.

Sophie Turner suffered a minor injury, pausing Tomb Raider filming

The injury happened during filming on the new live-action series, where the Game of Thrones alum takes on the iconic role of Lara Croft. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the halt in a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly, emphasizing that the setback is minor.

“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” the studio said. Production on the series officially began on January 15. While the Tomb Raider’s Sophie Turner casting announcement got an exciting reception last September, the show does not yet have a confirmed release date.

The Tomb Raider franchise has proven to be a durable property for adaptation since the original video game launched in 1996. Angelina Jolie first brought the character to theaters in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), which grossed more than double its budget. Its sequel, The Cradle of Life, followed in 2003, making $160 million worldwide.

After a pair of animated series, the franchise got a reboot in 2018 with Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander in the lead role. That film similarly performed well, grossing over double its production budget. Now, the upcoming Tomb Raider is being spearheaded by Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is the creative behind the project.

Following Turner’s casting, Waller-Bridge praised the choice. “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving,” she said. Joining her is an impressive cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, and Celia Imrie.
