The PS Store stopped offering PSN avatars for sale quite a while ago, but there’s still a sizeable chunk of the community ready to pay for them. I often spot requests from players to release premium avatars like days of yore, and those requests are answered by… shovelware developers.
There is still a market for premium PSN avatars on PS Store
The PS Store is flooded with AI slop that offers premium avatar bundles. Given the frequency of them and the fact that they receive hundreds of verified ratings, we’re pretty sure that there’s still quite a market for them, and shady devs realize that.
This Italian Brainrot bundle, for example, is based on internet memes and frequently circulates on gaming subreddits. Frankly, I had no idea what Italian Brainrot was until I decided to finally click on the PS Store listings shared by other users out of sheer curiosity.
“One of the things I enjoy is having avatars for my profile,” a player explained on Reddit. “Sony definitely needs to bring back the ability to buy avatars again.”
“Agreed,” a fellow player responded. “I’m glad I’ve got my old account, as I’ve unlocked and purchased about one hundred or so, including heaps of old school Final Fantasy ones.”
It’s no surprise that when premium PS3 avatars went missing from the PS5 and PS App, some players panicked a little. Most of the concerns I saw revolved around losing something of sentimental value rather than monetary value.
Sony does drop some cool free avatars every now and then, but that untapped market for premium avatars is encouraging dodgy developers to clog the PS Store with cheap bundles.
While Sony has pledged improvements, we haven’t seen anything meaningful so far.
