Schitt’s Creek creator Dan Levy’s new series on Netflix has debuted with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score that is currently better than the former. Reviews have also surfaced, with a majority of them praising it for its humor, style, performances, and tone. The crime comedy’s inaugural outing debuted on April 9, 2026, dropping all eight episodes at once.
What critics are saying about Big Mistakes in reviews
Big Mistakes on Netflix has garnered a predominantly positive reception. Critics are lauding the style, humor, and Dan Levy and co-star Taylor Ortega’s performances.
Samantha Coley of Collider said in her review that fans shouldn’t expect the “warm, often wholesome comedy” that made Schitt’s Creek popular. She called the new show “a bold, action-packed, often suspenseful, and at times uncomfortable crime thriller that operates at a speed that would break traffic laws in Schitt’s Creek.”
Meanwhile, The Hashtag Show‘s Amelia Harvey deemed the Netflix series “a breath of fresh air” in the comedy genre. She added, “In a world where most comedies come with morality tales and as much tragedy as a drama, society needs something as silly as this.”
Mashable‘s Belen Edwards praised the chemistry between Levy and Ortega, labeling them “a stellar comedy duo” who fed on “each other’s frenetic energy to turn each illegal deal into a tour de force of cringe comedy.”
Abe Friedtanzer of Awards Buzz deemed Big Mistakes “unapologetically brash,” noting that it did not leave room for exposition by constantly ensuring that each scene had something important taking place. He also praised the finale, calling it “a fantastic finish that sets up an even more appealing potential second season.” Furthermore, he commended the creative team of Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott, calling them an “excellent pair” who rivaled the former and Ortega when it came to those two breathing life into the show.
However, not all reviews were positive. Screenrant‘s Dani Kessel Odom criticized the Netflix show’s storytelling, calling it “frustratingly chaotic and inconsistent.” She further stated, “Big Mistakes throws us to the wolves and expects us to figure things out as we go, but they never give us enough answers for it to be satisfying.”
Big Mistakes starts with better Rotten Tomatoes score than Schitt’s Creek
As of writing, Big Mistakes has a fresh 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes‘ Tomatometer, based on 17 reviews. This is slightly better than the 93% on Schitt’s Creek’s Tomatometer.
However, the new comedy show’s rating will undoubtedly change — either going up or down — once more reviews come in.
