Robert Eggers is dragging audiences back into the darkness, and this time he’s bringing teeth. The first official Werwulf trailer starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson debuted during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, offering a visceral glimpse into the director’s 13th-century nightmare.
Werwulf called Robert Eggers’ ‘most terrifying motion picture’ after trailer
Scheduled to release in theaters on December 25, exactly two years after his hit Nosferatu, Robert Eggers’ Werwulf trailer has already got fans talking, with early buzz labeling it the filmmaker’s most savage work to date.
The black-and-white teaser wastes no time establishing dread. It features a montage of desecrated graves, fog-choked countryside, and mauled corpses rendered in the stark historical realism that defines Eggers’ visual style. The Werwulf trailer builds tension by keeping the creature largely obscured, opting instead to focus on the physical horror of the transformation itself.
Furthermore, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is seen nude and convulsing violently as his human form begins its grotesque shift. The camera lingers on his face as spit floods a mouth suddenly filled with fangs, though the trailer deliberately stops short of revealing the monster’s full appearance.
Werwulf is a reunion for Eggers’ growing repertory company. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp are back alongside Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson, all fresh off Nosferatu. Depp, in particular, seems poised to cement her status as a modern horror icon, as the Robert Eggers werewolf film is punctuated by several of her pained, guttural shrieks echoing through the foggy English countryside.
The cast is rounded out by Jack Morris, Jan Bijvoet, Ritchi Edwards, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach. Co-written with Sjón, Eggers’ partner on The Northman, the logline promises a story where “local folklore becomes a terrifying reality for the villagers.”
This pivot to lycanthropy comes as Universal continues to navigate the rocky terrain of its classic monster IP. Recent vampire outings like Abigail and Renfield failed to ignite the box office. But now Eggers’ pedigree commands a different level of anticipation (via Variety).
So if the Werwulf trailer is any indication, Christmas Day 2026 is going to be anything but silent.
