Scary Movie 6 Important Box Office Milestone Success Hit Flop[Image Credit: Paramount Pictures]

The revival of the horror-comedy Scary Movie, also known as Scary Movie 6, has crossed a significant box office goal for the franchise. The parody film didn’t have a considerable budget at only $30 million — which is actually smaller than the budgets for Scary Movie 2, 3, and 4 from two decades ago — it had a breakout opening weekend when it debuted nationwide on June 5. Directed by Michael Tiddes and marking the return of the Wayans family to the series, Scary Movie has managed to become a nostalgic hit with audiences despite it being widely panned by critics. And against the odds, it’s one of just a handful of movies over the past month to become a box office success.

Scary Movie is one of only a few box office successes in June

As of June 25, 2026’s Scary Movie has earned a whopping $204 million at the global box office ($99 million domestic and $105 million international), per Box Office Mojo. This is the first time that the long-running franchise has crossed the $200 million mark since 2003’s Scary Movie 3 that made $220 million worldwide. In fact, if Scary Movie 6 is able to earn an additional $16 million, which is very possible over the rest of June and July, it will set the box office record for the series.

To put the movie’s success into perspective, 2013’s Scary Movie 5 only had a $14 million domestic opener on route to a $78 million global haul. Fortunately, it had a very low budget of $20 million, so it was still able to be a box office success (following the general rule that a film needs to make 2.5 times its budget to make a profit). So with the numbers that Scary Movie 6 is pulling, it looks like the franchise will see at least a few more installments with the Wayans at the helm, especially considering the incredible rise of the horror genre over the last two years with the likes of Sinners, Backrooms, Weapons, and Obsession (just to name a few).

As noted by Deadline, the Wayans Bros. Entertainment and Paramount Pictures production only had a $30 million cost “assembled by the Jonathan Glickman-led Miramax, who got the Wayans back together behind and in front of the camera.” This shows a mending of the fences, so to speak, as the Wayans had left the franchise after Scary Movie 3 due to conflicts with Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein who headed Miramax at the time. This $30 million figure means that Scary Movie 6 only needed to bring in about $75 million in theaters to be considered a box office success, and now the movie is on track to triple that amount.

While critics have given Scary Movie 6 a scathingly low 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are far more satisfied with the reboot with their 65% rating on the site. This isn’t exactly a surprise, though, since every movie in the franchise has received ‘Rotten’ status. For what it’s worth, this 23% critics rating is actually higher than the 4% for Scary Movie 5 and the 13% for Scary Movie 2. That said, its 65% audience score marks the first time a Scary Movie film has received a viewer rating that isn’t ‘Rotten.’

Still, it’s a bit of a surprise that this Scary Movie reboot has become a box office success amid a high number of flops this past month. Apart from Toy Story 5 (and perhaps The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act), other films in June like Masters of the Universe and Disclosure Day are still struggling to make a profit at the box office, and Supergirl is predicted to have a rough outing as well. While May’s Backrooms and Obsession were major hits, Mortal Kombat 2, The Sheep Detectives, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu have not faired as well in breaking even either.
