Robert Redford‘s death has left the industry devastated. He was an iconic actor and filmmaker, known for classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting. Beyond cinema, he was a political activist and co-founder of Sundance Resort and the Sundance Film Institute. As the industry mourns his loss, celebrities like the Russo Brothers, James Gunn, and Leonardo DiCaprio have paid tribute to the Hollywood icon and his legacy.

Redford passed away at age 89. Publicist Cindi Berger announced that he died naturally at “Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.” After learning about his death, many celebrities took to social media to share their memories of him and pay tribute.

The Russo Brothers took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Avengers: Endgame, in which Robert Redford played Alexander Pierce. He earlier played the role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

They wrote, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the incomparable Robert Redford — a true legend whose acting and directing inspired us throughout our careers. His legacy will live on through his extraordinary films, his incredible performances, his tireless activism, and the profound influence that Sundance has had on the trajectory of the industry and the lives of thousands of filmmakers. There are very few people who have impacted modern storytelling as significantly as Robert … and we are deeply grateful for our time with him.”

James Gunn elaborated on his fond memory of watching Redford’s movies growing up in a tweet. He wrote, “I grew up with his movies: his quiet, unforced performances and ever-present grace. He was THE movie star, and will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, Robert.” He listed his beloved top 10 Redford movies, which included The Natural, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Candidate.

Reflecting on Redford’s legacy, DiCaprio also shared on Instagram, “Actor, activist, passionate environmentalist, and champion of the arts. His unwavering commitment to protecting our planet and inspiring change matched his immense talent. His impact will endure for generations to come.” Jane Fonda also posted a long note, recalling their collaboration on their last movie, “Our Souls at Night.” She honored his political and cinematic contributions, along with their good times on set. Celebrities like Ethan Hawke, Rosie O’Donnell, Colman Domingo, and others also share their respective tributes to Redford.
