Director Ridley Scottis poised to make a long-awaited return to the sci-fi genre this year, with the upcoming film The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordiand Josh Brolin. It will be his first sci-fi movie since the 2017 release Alien: Covenant, which delivered lukewarm results at the box office. In recent years, Scott has focused almost exclusively on historical movies such as Gladiator II, but none of them were able to break out commercially. One of these recent historical movies, The Last Duel, appears to have developed a strong cult following thanks to excellent reviews, despite emerging as one of the biggest flops of Scott's career. The film that Scott directed two years later underperformed as well. But it seems to be having a resurgence on streaming while another period epic experiences box-office success in theaters.
