Ricky Martin received the first-ever Latin Icon award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, held at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. The Puerto Rican singer performed a medley of his most recognized hits before accepting the honor, which recognized his role in paving the way for Latin artists in global music.

In his acceptance speech, Martin thanked fans for their support throughout his four-decade career, beginning with his early days in Menudo. “This is for you all,” he said. “Thank you so much for your applause. I am addicted to your applause. That’s why I keep coming back. It’s you, not only here in America, but all over the world.” He added, “We just want to unite countries. We just want to break boundaries and we just want to keep music alive.”

At the 2025 ceremony, Mariah Carey received the Video Vanguard Award and Busta Rhymes the Rock the Bells Visionary Award. Lady Gaga led nominations with 12, followed by Bruno Mars with 11 and Kendrick Lamar with 10. Other nominees included ROSÉ, Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Billie Eilish.
