A reliable leaker has claimed that Sony is launching a revised PS5 Slim Digital edition with a change that might not be well-received. The cheaper PS5 variant will now come with a smaller SSD, with storage capacity of just 825 GB as opposed to 1 TB.
Revised PS5 model will supposedly help Sony avoid further price increases
According to trusty Dealabs user billbil-kun, this move comes in response to rising costs that have led to pricier consoles. In order to avoid further price increases, Sony has seemingly decided that it’ll sell PS5 Digital with a smaller SSD while the standard PS5 will retain the 1 TB storage — a baffling move considering digital consoles fill up pretty fast with hefty downloads.
That said, Sony does sell stand-alone disc drives, should players run out of space.
Billbil-kun claims that the revised PS5 Digital model — CFI-2100 — will begin rolling out in Europe starting September 13.
Just yesterday, we reported that Capcom has lamented PS5 price increases, and partially blamed the console’s high entry barrier for Monster Hunter: Wilds’ less-than-stellar sales. With PS5 being the console of choice for a vast majority of console gamers, Capcom reckons that Sony’s revised pricing is starting to impact the commercial performance of video games.
