Westerns have gone through so many different phases of reinvention that the "revisionist" approach has now become derivative. Filmmakers have been taking darker, more realistic approaches to this era in history since the ‘70s, when it was first brought up that the “Wild West” was a far darker and more dangerous era than it had been made out to be by cinema. The best way for modern Westerns to say something meaningful and different about the genre is to change who gets to tell the story. Prime Video's The Englishis an exciting, beautifully made Western thriller about the alliance between the Englishwoman Lady Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt) and the former Pawnee Nation member Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), who determine it would be within their mutual interests to work together to plot the ultimate mission of revenge.
