Paradise Lost Update Proves DC Treats Wonder Woman Like the Trinity’s Third Wheel

It’s a tale as old as time. Superman and Batman continue to receive new movies and shows at record speed, while Wonder Woman‘s fans have to settle for less, or in this case, nothing.

When DC Studios unveiled the first 10 projects set to be part of its new DC Universe, Wonder Woman was the only member of the DC Trinity not to have a solo film announced. Instead, James Gunn revealed that a Game of Thrones-like prequel exploring the Amazons of Themyscira was in the works, and titled Paradise Lost.

However, after three years in “extreme development,” the project is reportedly now on the back burner at HBO with no signs as to when it might actually get produced. It’s a slap in the face to fans of Wonder Woman, who is starting to feel like a third wheel to Batman and Superman.

DC Studios is failing Wonder Woman by sidelining Paradise Lost

Bluntly: Wonder Woman fans deserve better. The superhero hasn’t been treated with the same level of respect and attention that DC gives to Batman and Superman since the ’70s. Wonder Woman has one live-action series, two animated films, and two live-action films. Batman and Superman have more than a dozen films each and multiple series focused on them.

Gunn hinted at wanting to make a Wonder Woman cartoon back in 2023, but there’s been nothing on that front since then. Wonder Woman should have had her own cartoon by now, but instead DC seems keen on giving the likes of Joker, Starfire, and Krypto their own animated series.

Paradise Lost seems like such a no-brainer of an idea for the DCU, especially considering how Gunn originally marketed the franchise. He wanted each DCU project to have its own flair instead of feeling formulaic like the Marvel Cinematic Universe had grown.

Just as Lanterns pulled from True Detective, Paradise Lost copying a thing or two from Game of Thrones made perfect sense. Even deciding to do Paradise Lost before Wonder Woman wasn’t the worst idea, given that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was still fresh in the public’s mind.

Unlike Batman and Superman, who have been recast in live-action more times than one can count on one hand, Gadot’s Wonder Woman was the first major live-action casting for the character since Lynda Carter in the ’70s. DC probably figured there needed to be a gap between Gadot’s last appearance and the Wonder Woman reboot. By starting with Paradise Lost, DC could ease audiences into the DCU’s take on the Wonder Woman mythos before actually introducing the title heroine.

But that’s all for naught now. While Superman gets his second “solo” movie in three years and Batman gets competing live-action films, Wonder Woman fans are left with nothing but the promise of a new live-action film at some point.

It’s a shame that DC is in no rush to reintroduce Wonder Woman. The first Gadot-led movie proved that she can be a major box office draw with the right cast and crew behind her, so it sucks that DC is fine keeping her as the third wheel of the Trinity. What should have been the start of a fresh era for the hero with Paradise Lost will now become the latest chapter in “unrealized Wonder Woman projects.”

But, hey, at least we’re getting that Jimmy Olsen/Gorilla Grodd show, right?
