Next Project Hail Mary Story From Andy Weir Revealed With Videos & Photo

Andy Weir recently revealed that his Project Hail Mary universe is expanding with a new story in a unique way. The announcement comes a month after the 2021 novel’s film adaptation, starring Ryan Gosling as the lead, Ryland Grace, launched in theaters. It garnered widespread positive reviews from critics, who lauded the story, humor, and performances. The sci-fi adventure also became a huge box office success, having grossed approximately $430 million globally as of writing.

Mixed-reality video game Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars has been announced

Andy Weir, author of the original book, announced Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, a mixed-reality video game. Poised to give an immersive experience, it will launch on major MR and VR (virtual reality) platforms like Meta Quest and PICO in late 2026.

In the announcement video, Weir called the MR game “the first step outside of what happens in the book that you can experience in mixed reality.”

An official poster, spotlighting book and movie protagonist Ryland Grace’s alien friend, Rocky, and an early look at the game, also dropped alongside the announcement.

The latter sees Weir and the film’s directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, react to a demo showing users navigating the ship and interacting with Rocky. The three were excited and impressed, with Lord and Weir also discussing what they would do when they played the game.

Lord claimed he would do a thumbs-up with Rocky just to have the latter get it wrong, referencing an iconic moment from the movie. Meanwhile, Weir said he would first explore all possible interactions with the fan-favorite character that were available to players.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars will see players step into the shoes of Ryland Grace as he finds himself dealing with a critical issue in his mission.

In the game, players are tasked with fixing the failing system of Grace’s ship. Accordingly, they will need to come up with a way to solve the problem. However, players will not be alone in their task as Rocky will be present to help out, thus allowing them to build a bond with the alien based on cooperation and trust.
