The U.S. publisher of George R.R. Martin‘s Westeros books has set the record straight on the ongoing rumors about The Winds of Winter. Earlier, an anonymous post, wherein an individual who claimed to be a production assistant at Bantam Spectra, said that the sixth novel will be released sometime around fall this year.
The author is said to have completed the book in 2025 and the entire manuscript was handed over this year. It also claimed that an official announcement won’t be made until Comic-Con. However, Martin could reveal it first on his blog.
Bantam Books dismisses recent rumors about The Winds of Winter publication
A representative from Bantam Books told Entertainment Weekly the truth about the release of the sixth entry in the Song of Ice & Fire saga. They said, “The online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false.” This comes amid a lengthy anonymous post, which shared unverified information including the book’s release, page count, release announcement, and time of completion.
Earlier this year, in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin revealed that he wants to prioritize writing new Winds of Winter, even though he hasn’t been “in the mood” to work on it. However, he is trying to complete other items on his checklist first before finishing the sixth book.
He also mentioned that he often revisits chapters from the book and rewrites them if he doesn’t find them good enough. When he gets frustrated, he temporarily moves his focus to another project as a break before returning to the book. He also suggested that he would “hate” it if another writer completes this book in his place.
During a conversation at New York Comic Con 2025, Martin also provided an update on the delay of The Winds of Winter. “I know there’s all this controversy about Winds of Winter and how late it is, but I’ve always had trouble with deadlines, and I don’t feel happy breaching contracts or missing a deadline or anything like that,” he said (via ScreenRant).
