If a new Jason Bourne movie is greenlit, Matt Damon has one key requirement to return.
In November 2023, All Quiet on the Western Front’s Edward Berger entered negotiations to direct and develop a new Bourne movie. There was no script at the time. Damon would only be approached to return once a screenplay was finished.
Fast forward to today, and Berger’s Bourne movie is in development. The Conclave director recently told Empire Magazine that he still wants to helm the new Bourne movie. His involvement revolves around one key aspect.
What is needed for Matt Damon to return for a new Jason Bourne movie?
“That’s all in the stars,” Berger explained. “I’d love to do it, but it depends on the script — whether we can find something for Matt Damon to play that he hasn’t before, and something that I don’t feel Paul Greengrass or the other directors have done.”
Berger added, “[Bourne] has such a legacy. You don’t want to make a film where people say, ‘Ah, it’s not as good as the others.’ There are many hurdles.”
Damon first starred as Jason Bourne in 2002’s The Bourne Identity. Based on Robert Ludlum’s novel, The Bourne Identity follows Jason Bourne, a man who suffers from amnesia after he’s left for dead. Bourne eventually learns that he once worked for the CIA as a trained assassin. To figure out what went wrong, Bourne goes rogue and fights back against those who tried to kill him.
The Bourne Identity’s success spawned three direct sequels: 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy, 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, and 2016’s Jason Bourne. In 2012, Jeremy Renner starred in The Bourne Legacy, which introduced a new protagonist, black ops agent Aaron Cross.
In August, NBCUniversal acquired all rights to the Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series. This potentially paves the way for future Bourne installments.
