Netflix has given a release date window to Season 2 of the Rurouni Kenshin anime. The 2023 anime is a shot-by-shot adaptation of the 1996 anime of the same name. These two adaptations are based on the manga by the mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki, who returned in 2018 to write new chapters, despite a massive controversy.

Rurouni Kenshin Season 2 to set Netflix release date for next month

According to What’s on Netflix, Season 2 of the Rurouni Kenshin anime has a release date set for October 2025 on Netflix. The anime will stream in many regions, including Canada, Latin America, South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and many more.

The anime, which is based on the manga penned by Nobuhiro Watsuki, is set to arrive on the streaming platform despite the controversy surrounding Watsuki. According to a report by Comicbook.com, Watsukin faced a charge of possessing child pornography, leading to the authorities ordering him to pay a fine of 1 million yen, aka $6,500, and serve a year in jail.

The public’s view of both the manga and the anime was impacted by Watsuki’s charges, and voice actor Howard Wang addressed the controversy by saying that he doesn’t “support those actions in any way.” He further announced that he would donate a part of his salary to charity.

Watsuki has paid a 200k yen fine, or $1,318, and served no jail time. Although he returned to write new chapters in 2018, the mangaka went on a break in 2024, and the anime also went on a hiatus. At that time, Shueisha released a statement, noting, “To our readers, thank you for reading Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc. Due to Nobuhiro Watsuki’s poor physical health condition, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc will be going on hiatus for a while. We have come to the decision that a period of rest will be the best way by which to prepare for the stable and continuous resumption of its serialization.”
