Moana Final Trailer Confirms Major Disney Return for Live-Action Movie

Disney’s final trailer for the live-action Moana remake has confirmed a major character’s return. The upcoming film retells the story of the 2016 animated feature, with Dwayne Johnson reprising the role of Maui.

Moana’s synopsis reads, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”

What do we see in the final Moana trailer?

The final Moana trailer confirms that Jemaine Clement will be reprising his role as Tamatoa from the original film. Most of the trailer shows Moana and Maui clashing with each other on their naval adventure. One scene shows Moana in the clutches of Tamatoa, the giant crab voiced by Clement. The rest of the footage shows live-action/photorealistic recreations of the animated film’s colorful action sequences. The trailer is set to “You’re Welcome” and “We Know the Way.”

Moana is directed by Thomas Kail. The film is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. It is executive-produced by Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, Kail, and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animated film.

Kail previously directed 2020’s film adaptation of Hamilton, and has also helmed episodes of 2 Broke Girls, Up Here, and We Were the Lucky Ones. The filmmaker also won a Tony Award for Best Direction on Hamilton.

The live-action Moana adaptation features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, and an original score composed by Mancina. Following the trailer’s release, tickets are now on sale.

Moana stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, Johnson as Maui, Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, John Tui as Chief Tui, Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa, and Frankie Adams as Sina.

Moana releases in theaters on July 10, 2026.
