Michael Jackson Biopic Could Get Sequels if 1 Major Condition Is Met

As the long-awaited Michael Jackson biopic finally gears up for its spring 2026 debut, audiences might be getting a sequel as well. While the upcoming film Michael focuses primarily on the King of Pop’s meteoric rise to fame, producers and studio executives are already eyeing the vault for a potential sequel. However, any plans for a Michael sequel hinge entirely on one major condition.

Michael sequels could happen if box office hopes are met

The path to getting Michael on screen has been a complicated dance. The original cut of the film ran well over three and a half hours. This forced producer Graham King to make major structural changes. According to Variety sources, a substantial portion of the film’s original third act was scrapped after attorneys for the Jackson estate realized a prior legal settlement barred the depiction of Jordan Chandler. As a result, the story was reshaped, and a new ending was devised.

This late-stage revision left Lionsgate and Universal with a wealth of unused material. The studios now believe roughly 30% of the jettisoned footage could be reconstituted for future films. King has indicated that any Michael sequel would pivot focus away from the early years. Rather, it will delve into Jackson’s later creative periods. It will likely include the albums Dangerous and Invincible, the construction of Neverland Ranch, and “his love of animals.”

However, greenlighting a follow-up requires the first film to be a monumental financial hit. Internally, the studio hopes Michael will gross at least $700 million worldwide. Early tracking suggests the film is on the right path. Projections point to a domestic opening north of $55 million. A figure that would surpass the 2018 launch of the smash hit Bohemian Rhapsody.

For now, all eyes are on the opening weekend figures to see if the King of Pop’s legacy remains as commercially powerful as his catalog.
