Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Full Cast With New Aragorn Revealed

Warner Bros. finally answered Middle-earth’s biggest casting question and raised several new ones at CinemaCon. The studio unveiled the full ensemble for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, bringing back beloved franchise veterans while introducing unexpected new faces to the fellowship.

Lord of the Rings unveils full cast, including Aragorn recast

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema revealed the cast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum at CinemaCon on Tuesday. Andy Serkis directs the film and reprises his role as Gollum/Smeagol. The studio confirmed the film will release in theaters on December 17, 2027.

Jamie Dornan will play Strider, later revealed as Aragorn, in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original novel. His casting clarifies earlier speculation that linked other actors to the role. Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood officially return as Gandalf and Frodo Baggins, respectively (via Variety).

The confirmed cast includes:

The film chronicles the search for Gollum in the years before The Fellowship of the Ring. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou wrote the screenplay. Peter Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens serve as producers on the project.

The original Lord of the Rings trilogy grossed around $3 billion worldwide and won 17 Academy Awards collectively. The Return of the King won a record-tying 11 Oscars, which included the Best Picture award, in 2004. Serkis’ motion-capture performance as Gollum in those films pioneered digital effects technology from Weta Workshop.

New Line Cinema’s Middle-earth return took place in 2024 with the animated feature The War of the Rohirrim. The studio is also currently producing the third season of LOTR: The Rings of Power for Prime Video.
