Law & Order: SVU’s showrunner just revealed what’s keeping Benson and Stabler apart. Michele Fazekas got candid about Christopher Meloni’s future on the show.

Michele Fazekas says she cares about Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler’s relationship

Law & Order: SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas recently opened up about the future of Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler’s relationship. Fazekas told PEOPLE she deeply values the connection between the two iconic characters. She also acknowledged the passionate fanbase that continues to root for the beloved duo.

“I think that’s a relationship that I really care about. I know the fans really care about [it],” Fazekas said. She added that she wants to “acknowledge that and service that as much as he’s available… which he’s often not.” Christopher Meloni’s packed schedule remains the biggest obstacle to bringing Stabler back to SVU.

Fazekas revealed she has actively tried to include Meloni in recent SVU storylines. “I love [Christopher] Meloni. I would use him as much as he wants to. I tried to!” she explained. However, the actor’s commitments elsewhere consistently make coordination difficult for the production team.

“[Meloni’s] very, very busy. I tried to bring him into this,” Fazekas shared. She noted that she sometimes checks on his availability by asking, “Hey, is he working?” The answer, she said, is always the same: “Oh yes, of course he’s working.”

Meloni originally portrayed Det. Elliot Stabler from the show’s 1999 premiere until his departure in 2011. He later reprised the role in 2021 for Law & Order: Organized Crime, which ran for five seasons. Reports confirmed in April that Organized Crime would not return for a sixth season.

Meloni now stars in the upcoming Hulu series The Land beyond the Law & Order universe. This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman developed the project alongside Mandy Moore and William H. Macy. The team completed filming over the past year in Los Angeles, further limiting Meloni’s SVU availability.
