Ken Jennings, the most successful Jeopardy player of all time, has finally opened up about his 74th game on the show, which brought his streak to an end. Jennings’ loss on November 30, 2004, became a topic of conversation. Many are theorizing that the current host of Jeopardy had lost on purpose. Over two decades after the loss, Jennings spoke about the loss and the rumors surrounding his exit.

Ken Jennings reveals if he consciously lost on Jeopardy

Ken Jennings, who managed a 74-game winning streak on Jeopardy! and amassed $2.5 million in the process, lost on November 30, 2004, while answering a question from “Business & Industry.”

With his performance up to that point, many fans refused to believe that Jennings really got the answer wrong. Speculations ranged from Jennings getting bored to Jennings throwing it away on purpose.

On April 14, 2026, Jennings answered the question on the Inside Jeopardy podcast. During the questions from the audience, one fan asked, “Did you really not know the answers to the last ‘Final Jeopardy’ question?”

Jennings responded (via EW), “For 20 years, this gentleman has been thinking I took a dive. Have you ever willingly quit a job where you were making $70,000 an hour?” Given the time Jennings spent on the show and the money he earned, the host was absolutely right in saying he was making $70,000 an hour.

“Maybe I thought you were getting bored,” another fan said from the audience. Jennings responded, “Getting bored? Getting bored, no.”

The veteran host went on to explain, “As it turned out, it was a clue about H&R Block, the tax prep company… I think I could have thought about that one all day, and I would not have figured out that was H&R Block. That’s kind of how these long runs go. They always seem inevitable until a few things happen, and then suddenly, they’re not so inevitable anymore.”

Jennings remains the contestant who has won the most consecutive games and amassed the highest earnings. He has served as the host of Jeopardy since 2021.
