Keanu Reeves' career took a hit not long after the success of the Matrix trilogy. He starred in a handful of small-scale projects, with the occasional big-budget studio movie thrown in. Not many of those films worked, with some of the bigger ones — Constantine, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and 47 Ronin — all underperforming either critically or commercially, or both. Reeves' career wouldn't turn around until 2014, when he starred in a seemingly innocuous action movie that emerged as a word-of-mouth hit, and built on its box-office success on the home video market. It spawned a franchise that continues to this day and has grossed more than $1 billion globally. We're talking, of course, about John Wick. But things were so uncertain back in the mid-2010s that Reeves attempted to replicate the first film's success with another action-thriller that debuted only four years later.
